BRUCE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Bruce County Council was held on the 4th; present —Crs Scott (chairman), Russell, Sheet, Driver, Sinclair, Gardyne, Bell, Boyd, Clark, Hyslop, Begg. The County Clerk submitted a statement of receipts and expenditure for the month, showing that the former totalled £l7B 3s lOd and the expenditure to £692 18s Id. Accounts to the latter amount were passed for payment. The Ranger reported that 12 horses and 31 head of cattle had been impounded during the month. —Adopted. The Inspector reported that a quantity of stone had been quarried at the Stoncy Creek-Hillend road for maintenance metal, and this would be put down during the coming month. Maintenance metal had been put down on the Stirling-Bcnbar, Stirling-Kaitangata. and Inch Clutha and also on the Clarksville-Glenore road. A start had been made to put in the concrete pipe culverts on the Coast road near Mr Hollamby's. The contractor had completed the work at Grange Hill road, Glenledi. The Swamp road at Taieri Mouth required raisins about one foot for about a distance of three chains, and recommended that this be done in the spring.—Adopted. The Collector of Customs advised that the output of gold from the county for March totalled loz. —Received. Mr W. Smaill wrote asking if the council had any record of permission being granted to have a division of the road at the saddle of the lull at section 10', block IX.—ld was decided that though, the j>evmission had been granted, the council take steps to have it stated in legal form. Applications for the renewal of slaughterhouse .licenses by Messrs David Scott (Stirling), Porter Bros. (Tokoiti), and Andren" M'L-aron (Milton) were granted. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote asking who was responsible for cleaning I out the main drain on the Barncgo Settlement, fronting sections 28a and -33 a ; was decided that the council, while giving permission to the settlers to clean out thedrain, disclaimed any liability. The Commissioner of Crown Lands (Invorcargill) wrote stating that the Land Board was prepared to recommend the Minister to agree to the sale of lot 3, section 1, block XLVIII, Tokomairiro, to the council. —Deferred until the _ next meeting, and a sub-committee, consisting of th« chairman, Crs Russell, Sheet, and the in-

spector was appointed to report as to the quantity of metal on this section. Mr Emilo Vandervelde (London) wrote isking for a subscription towards a fund for providing Belgian soldiers with comforts.; —Received. The Secretary of the Otago Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote that the levy on the council for the current year would be £1712 4s 2d, this being based upon the napital value of the rateable property in the county—£l,4B6.49o.—Received. The tender of Mr W. M'lntosh (Clydevale) for metalling nine chains of road at Buchanan's, Greenfield, at £5 7s 6d per chain, was accepted. It was also decided that a conference of all the local bodies in the Taieri, Bruce, Clutha, and Tuapeka- Counties meet at Milton to discuss the question of heavy traffic.
