CHIEF TELEGRAPH ENGINEER.
After 44 years' service, _Mr J. Orchiston has tendered his resignation as chief telegraph engineer of New Zealand, a position ho has occupied with conspicuous ability since January, 1911. Mr Orchiston entered the service as a cadet on January 15, 1874. He rose rapidly, and in 1894 became inspector for the Otago district. In 1911 he was appointed chief engineer for tho Dominion. Mr Orchiston has always taken the liveliest interest in the development of water power for electrical purposes. While at Auckland he devised and supervised the erection of a plant for lighting the Thames Post Office by_ electricity. He advanced the project of utilising the Bowen Falls at Milford Sound for. hydro-electric power. Mr Orchiston is also an enthusiastic botanist, and it was > owing to his endeavours that the interesting plantation of native flora was established on the hills round Wellington Wireless Station.
