CFbok Odb Own Correspondent.) OAMABTJ, May 11. The stock market remains very quiet, but judging from the results at the two regular sales this week, at tho AVuiareka yards anil Duntroon, the tone of the market in respeot to sheep is a shade better. The yardings were, however, much below tho average, and the sales can scarcely be considered as fully disclosing the condition of the market. Afc neither sale was anything of particular merit offered, and the most than can bo said is that the small yardings were disposed of at fair prices, fat animals being tho, steadiest id values, lambs at "Wiuareka reaching 32s 3d, and at Duntroon 30s Id. Sales by private treaty have been few and of small amount. A line of six and eight-tooth ewes changed hands at 31s 6(1, sound-mouthed ewes at 27s 6d, mixed two and four-tooth wethers at 27s 6d, and mixed sex hog_ gets at 19s. "Very little business has been passing in cattle, which are not obtainable in any number or with any regularity. The sales during the week comprised some " modest lines of 2£-year-o!d steers, which brought from £8 to £lO 10s, and mixed sex yearlings at from £3 10s to £3 15s. SOUTHLAND STOCK MARKET. (From Our Own Correspondent.) IN-VEROAEGIDIfc May 11. Prices for store cattle are easier than those ruling for the last few weeks, and store sheep have also gone back slightly. The quantity of fat stock going into the works is not .nearly as great as last year, and it looks as if an extra heavy quantity will have to be carried through the winter on our feed here. If Canterbury does not come in June and July for hoggets and wethers it is certain that in the early spring stock business will be hard to do and prices somewhat easy. However, with a good deal of feed in Canterbury, it seems practically certain that they will have to come south to stock up. Trices may be quoted :

ADDINGTON STOCK MARKET. CHRISTCHURCH, May 8. The yardings of fat cattle and fat sheep wero larger than . those of last week, and there were fewer store sheep and fat lambs. The attendance was also much reduced, as the store sheep market does not now attract so many buyers. In fat cattle the yarding was a large one, including several prime station lines, but tho market was easier, and lost the recovery in prices that was made a fortnight ago. Store sheep wero mostly of poor quality, and mot with a dull sale, many lots being pasaed. Fat lambs showed no change in values, and fat sheep sold steadily at export values. Tho store cattle wero such a mixed lot that it was difficult to form an idea of values. Dairy cows sold well, and pigs sold rather better than last week.

Store Sheep.—Six and eight-tooth ewes, 25s to 32s 3d; sound-mouthed ewes, 14s to 255; two-tooth wethers, 22s 3d to 26s 3d; two and four-tooth wethers, 25s to 25s 3d; four and six-tooth wethers, 25s to 31s sdi; six and eight-toolh wethers, 26s to 33s 9d; mixed sex lambs, 16s 6d to 235; wether lambs, to 19s 9d; fat lambs, prime lambs, 27s 6d to 325; medium, 24s to 275; lighter, 18s to 23s 6d.

THE CO'OPEBATITE FRUITGROWERS OP OTAGO, LTD., * .i Moray place, Dunedin. E. OSWALD BEILLT, Manager. CHRISTCHUBCH MARKETS. (Per Uxited Press Association.) : '- CHRISTCHUBCH, May 14. The grain and produce market opened very quietly this week, and there is riddling fresh to report in connection with grain, chaff, or pota_ toes. The last-named are not offering very freely. since the price declined. From £5 to £5 10s at country stations is still being offered. 'Clean white clover seed is now worth only Is 3d to Is Gd per pound, the market being easier in consequence of supplies being larger than was . Anticipated. On the other hand, red clover is firmer, and from Is 3d to Is Gd is being paid. White Ivory and Blue Imperial peas axe also lower. Linseed is now quoted at £22 per ton at country stations. PROPERTY SALE. . There was keen competition for the farming properties near Clarendon and Milton which were sold by auction yesterday by the National Mortgage and Agency Company for the administrators of the estate of the late John Cuminc. The Clarendon property, which has been occupied by Mr Goo. Grey, was .sold for £645 to Messrs N. and E. S. Paterson, as agents. Lot 2, which was divided into two separate portions, occupied until recently by Messrs Henry Sell and Jas. Finch, was sold to the latter for £6lO and £525 for the two divisions respective^. IMPORTS AND EXPORTS. During the week a heavy cargo has arrived from Melbourne. Included in the shipment was 6000 Backs of barley, GOO sacks of fowl wheat, 3000 bags of Mount Lyell superphosphate, 1400 sacks of bark for tanning, 1300 sacks of potatoes, and other smaller lines. A quantity of stuff was also brought for northern ports. In addition about 1000 tons of general cargo will bo loaded at Dunedin for these northern'ports. Ono lino consists of 2000 sacks of chaff from Duncdia merchants. THE TEA MARKET. •- At present fair stocks of tea arsv helrt in Dunedin, but in the absence of sMjipinp facilities from the East and the high freights the marked has a steady upward tendency. it should be made clear that whereas some proprietary lines have advanced the price of their 2s packet teas to 2s 2d, Dunedin packers who have specialised in 2a pound packet teas havo not so far increased the price of tho particular quality. ■ NEW ZEALAND PAPER MILLS. Tho annual report of the New Zealand Paper Mills for the year ended Maroh 31 last, states that after making provision for all bad and

doubtful debts ,and for depreciation on plant, machinery, and stocks, tho balance of profits for tha year" amounts to £21,02G 2s, adding to this tho balance at the end of last financial year, £1319 5s 3d (£22,375 7s 3d), and deducting interim dividend paid on November 1, 1917, £2843 6s, there is left available £19,532 2s 3d. Tho directors recommend that this be dealt with as follows :—Payment of dividend at the rn.t*> of 4 per cent, for the six months (making 7 per cent, for the year), £3791; addition to reserve fund, £5000; to* reserve for income and war taxes, £9000; carry forward, £1741 2s 3d—£19,532 2s 3d. _ The unusual conditions caused by lack of shipping and consequent reduction in imports have enabled the company to considerably increase the output of the mills, which have, however, been somewhat affected by a temporary shortage of raw material. For this reason tho mill at lliverhead has not run full time, but the others have been operating continuously. Mr F. W. Mitchell retires from tho board' by rotation; but 3s eligible and offers himself for re-election, as do the auditors, Messrs Barr, Leary ,and Co., Dunedin, and Mr W. Wallace Bruce, Auckland.
