■a BSO Rows to make use of companion crops—that is, early vegetables planted between those which mature later; also of succession crops—that is, late beets, beans, turnips, &c, to be planted after you have har-
vested your early peas, radishes, lettuce, etc. Have the rows run north and south so that each plant will get its share of sun. Those who live in the country should make the kitchen garden in a field with a farm cultivated crop with the rows in line with the rows of this crop. The menfolk can then cultivate it with the horse when they cultivate the farm crop. Our illustrations are taken, from Circular 198, University of Illinois. Figure 850 illustrates rows of companion plants; Figure 851, a homemade row marker; Figure 852, a two-wheeled hoe. We mentioned last week the following bulletins which will help you and which can be had for the asking:—"Home Vegetable Gardening," Circular 198, University of Illinois, Urbana, 111. "The Small Vegetable Garden," Farmers' Bulletin 818,\ U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, Washington, D.G. "The Vegetable Garden," by Saxby Blair, Dept of Agriculture, Ottawa, Canada.
