A serious theft was perpetrated on a vessel before it left Auckland recently (reports the- New Zealand Herald). Mr Leadingham, a passenger, left his cabin for a few minutes, and when he Returned ho found that his suit-ease, containing jewellery- and personal effects to the value of £154, and also private papers, was missing. Up to the time the vessel sailed no trace of the bag- had been, found. ,At the time of the theft the police and a military guard were at the gangway and no ono was allowed ashore.. It is not considered likely that the bag could, have been taken, ashore bs' boat from the other side-of the vessel.
