INQUEST.

DEATH OF A CHILD

An inquest was opened on Monday afternoon by Mr Bartholomew as to the oiroumeiances surrounding tho death of an Infant, the body oi which was left by a young women in a suit case in a shop. Mr Sourr appeared for tho young woman, whoso name is Mary-Walker, and Detective Kemp represented the police.

Dr Evans stated that ho had examined the girl at 6.30 p.m. on Saturday, at her mother's request, at tho residence of tho girl's sister at St. Clair. She had slated that the baby was born at 3 a.m. on Saturday, that her mother knew nothing about it. and thai tho baby would bo found in a suit caso at Mr Andorson's chemist shop in Stuart street. He gave tho mother a letter to admit tho girl to tho Hospital, then went to tho placo indicated, opened the su ; t case, and found the body of a toalo child. He had mado a post-mortem examination of the body by the coroner's Orders on Sunday. Frank L. Anderson, a chemist, carrying en business in Stuart street, stated that

Mary Walker called at his shop on Saturday, with her mother, about 11 a.m.. after coming from Lawrence. The girl had a suit case with her, and at tho mother's suggestion she left it in the ehop, tho mother saying that would bo better than carryI ing it about, as she was tired. That was the suit caso that Dr Evans had opened. To Mr Sourr: Mary Walker was his ! sister-in-law. She and other members # of ! the family were in tho habit of leaving ■ parcels at his shop when they came to town. The further hearing of evidence was adjourned sine die.
