AUCKLAND TOPICS.

By Taiitoa.

Tho just concluded spring meeting of the Auckland Racing Club passed off. like all Ellerslic meetings, very successfully, but it cannot bo said that the racing was enjoyed in comfort, because rain fell on both days, an'i the weather made matters very miserable for those present. Tho racing was, on tho whole, very interesting—big fields and, in most cases, close finishes being tho tw.i features. A fair percentage of favourites won, so that, taken all through, backers could only complain at tho weather. The Guineas did not, produce a very spirited contest, and, judging by tho form, the three-year-olds are far from a good lot. The winner turned up in the Hon. J. D. Qrmond's representative Hyllus, but he had to bo ridden right out to beat Bjornoborg, who, I have no doubt, would have won from home. The Auckland filly Waiuta but for getting knocked back three furlongs ran very poorly. She was in front at the home turn, but from there she stopped to nothing, and at present she must be put amongst those of the ordinaries. Tho Welcome Stakes was just a working gallop for tho Marble Arch gelding Gwent, win went to the front at the end of a furlong and just cantered along. Unfortunately, after winning the- race, and while being taken home, Gwent shied on the road, and getting rid of the boy bolted, and falling broke one of his legs. It was bid luck for his owner, as he was undoubtedly a good two-year-old who would have won many races. Lady Penury won the City Handicap from the barrier rise, the favourite, Colonel Soult, never being sighted at any part of tho journey. However, in the King Edward Memorial on tho second day Colonel Soult won in fine style, though it must bo admitted Mr Morse took a liberty in letting him off with 8.11. As I expected El Gallo ran a good race in the King Edward Memorial; but. though he beat all but one, he had no chance of beating Colonel Sor.lt. Still El Gallo is a useful sort. Bisogne was easily the best sprinter seen out at the meeting, and after being unlucky in tho City Handicap on the first day, he won tho Epsom Handicap like a champion on the next. Tii-own Loch was tho best of tho hacks, winning on the first elay and running second to .\]l Delaval on the second day. The latter was unlucky in his first start. To Onga was backed for big money in the hurdles, but the best he could do was to run second to Tenacious, who beat him easily. There was plenty of incident in the Steeplechase. Gluepot fell at tho second fence from home, and then Bonnie Joan was left with a. big lead, but sho hit tho last fence hard and toppled over. A bystander, A Coles, was quickly in the saddle, and. riding a great finish amidst great excitement, just got up to beat Captain Loch a head for second place. On paper it looks as though Handicappcr Morse le's taken a risk in Jotting Kitty Bellairs in tho open sprint at Takapuna with 7.12. SALES OF rse.cpr? STOCK. Cnitl ' November 9. At the annual bl' -tom: sales 38 yearlings were sold at prices i„ •.'!•..: r-.-m 25gns to C2Rgns, tho latter figure beii h- E. J. watt for a Martian—Grain in colt. The bidding, on tho whole, was nob i p to espeotationa.
