THE BRITISH BOMBARDMENT.
LONDON, June 29. Correspondents at the British front state that heavy shelling of the German lines has been in progress since the 26th. If the enemy were in any doubt as to the formidable character of the British artillery and our willing, ness to use ammunition this must have been readily dispelled The British object, simple, and terrible, is to kill Germans in large numbers, save our man-power, destroy German batteries, break defensive works, blow up ammunition stores, bring down balloons, bombard men and communication trenches, billets, and rest camps, and generally cause destruction of the enemy’s offensive powers. The German reply thus far has been slight and ineffective. We seem to be working havoc and desolation to the extent of the range of our guns along the whole front. A certain village was used as billets and local headquarters. That village to-day is non-existent; even the wood in which it nestled is gone. The boom of the guns is practically ceaseless on the Loos salient.
