A NEW ZEALANDER'S BET.
LONDON, June 28. In the Anzacs' raid upon enemy trenches a burly New Zealander made a bet before starting that he would bring back a prisoner. As he dragged a miserable, terror-stricken victim over the parapet of the British trenches by the scruff of the neck he claimed his bet, but apologised for not bringing in a better specimen.
(From New Zealand Official -War Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, June 28. A special from the New Zealand official war correspondent states that two very successful raids were carried out by the Anzac troops last night at points 500 yards distant from one another in a German trench. The bombardment was a short one, only eight minutes being occupied in preparing the ground for the raid. Many Germans were killed by the raiding parties and the bombardment, and 13 were taken prisoners. This is now the fifth successful raid made within about three weeks by the Anzac troops. ENEMY COUNTER-ATTACK CHECKED. ' PARIS, June 28. A communique states: West of the Meuse there were chiefly grenade skirmishes at Hill 304 and Mort Homme. North-east of Hill 321 our curtain fire checked a German 'counter-attack between Fleury and the edge of the Yaux-Chapitre Wood. A communique states: After a lively artillery preparation in the Champagne the Germans penetrated some ~of our small posts on the Tahure salient, but were driven out. Our grenade attacks progressed on the outskirts of Thiaumont work.
