OWAKA
Jane 25.—W0 are now past the shortest day. and, with the exception of the past week, have had very i.itic bad weather. During the week it has rained almost incessantly, and the ground is thoroughly soaked, most of the low-lying land being under water. To-day is fair, with a fairly high glass, and we "are fooking for some severe frosts. There is a good deal of unseasonable growth, and I have noticed that in places the grass is quite green. School Affairs. — We have had some changes in the local school, Miss B. Woodhouse having resigned, and her place is filled by Miss E. Eraser, late of Kaitangata. Miss M. Vickers, second assistant, has also left the district, Miss A. Willoeks taking her place. The bad weather has brought on the inevitable colds and sicknesses, and the school attendances have been poor.
The roads are really disgraceful, and I am sure that some of the town children would hardly realise tho hardships which their country friends have to put up with.
Concert and Dance. —On Friday evening a very successful concert and dance was tendered to two returned soldiers —Privates L. Cook and Connell. Red Cross. —The Red Cross Society i 3 doing splendid work. The ladies are turning out a large quantity of 'work, while those who cannot come to the meetings send in large bundles of sewing and knitting. Really, though the war is such a curse, it is bringing out the splendid qualities of unselfishness and the desire to work for others in our workers. Wedding.—A military wedding took place in the Presbyterian Church, on Friday week, v.'hen Miss Ina Wybcr was married to Mr W. Williamson, who is shortly leaving for the front. It was the occasion of much interest, as it was the first wedding of a military nature that has been held in Owaka. Many good wishes follow the young couple. Personal.—The friends- of Mrs M'Phee will hear with regret that she is seriously ill, and many wishes will be put forth for her recovery.
