Juno 26. —The weather during the past week Ims boon exceptionally \< ct, a groat deal of rain having- {'alien on the first three days of the week, with the result that tho Taieri River was higher than it has been for years. 1 * Tho absence of frost for some time previous to the rain left the soil in good order to absorb moisture, and the ground should now be soaked to a considerable depth— a welcome change for the Central Otago farmer. At time of writing the weather seems settled again, and there is every indication that the wot weather is to be followed by severe frost. Stock.—Owing to the mildness of the weather stock are wintering well in spite of the shortage of feed, but tho unusually large numbers of heavily-laden stock trains, which have recently passed through,' would seem to indicate that sdieop-owncrs are finding it necessary to reduce their stock for tho winter. Patriotic- —A number of the Kokonga ladies have formed themselves into a patriotic society, and are working diligently in tho interests of the Dominion gift parcel scheme, meeting on tho firrt Thursday of each month to pack their donations. A box representing their first month's work was despatched a short time ago. a very satisfactory quantity of goods comincr to hand.. Three of our local young men have just returned to camp after "having been home on fmnl leave. It is tho wish of their many friends that they may all return safe and we]! when they have done their share in settling- our score with Kaiser Bill and his satellites. Private D. Peid, who has been invalided in England for several months, returned home, about weeks ago. Tt is to bo hoped that his native climate will soon restore him to the robust health which he enjoyed before he -went .away.
