MILBURN (CLARENDON).

Juno s—The weather lately has "been very good—sharp frosts followed by nice clear days. ploughing is now the order of the day, and the stubble land is turning up in splendid condition. Not much lea has been ploughed, and there will probably bo less acreage in grain crop than usual. Some of the turnips are sadly affected with blight and rot, and will not stand a groat deal of feeding. Thrashing is now practically over, but there is a good deal of chaff to cut yet. Accidents. —The infant son of Mr and Mrs Baker met with a painful accident recently. By some moans a largo needle became embedded in h;s log, necessitating going to Dunedin for surgical skill. School Affairs.—The school children, under the direction of Mr Pilling, take great interest in the school garden, and were successful in gaining first prize for the plot of mangolds in the Education Board’s competition. Concert.—A concert, organised by some young people called the “Milburn Minstrels,” was held in the school recently. There was a fair attendance,_ and a varied programme of songs, recitations, tableaus, etc., was given. Mrs W. Grey was ebairwoman, and during the evening Mr Cawley, our minister, commended the work of the (Rod Cross Society, to which the proceeds of the concert, amounting to ±l2 4s, were given. The largest part of the entertainment was given by Miss Ethel Simonsen, and she was supported by Misses Jessie MTntcsh'. Alma Grey, Vivian Grey. Dorothy Strain, Masters Rodger, Grey, and James Smith. Rod Cross Party.—Last Monday evening a Red Cross party was given by Mr and Mrs Russell at their large homestead. The Russelis are noted for their hospitality, and a very sociable time was pent. After, games, music, and supper, a sale of goods was held, and people almost tumbled over one another to buy, with the result that the splendid sum of £l6 12s SRI was raised for the Red Cross Society, on behalf of which Mrs Pilling (president) and Miss M. Williamson (bon. secretary) briefly returned thanks.
