NATIONAL APPLE SHOW
A meeting' of representative fruitgrowers was held on Tuesday. 30th ult., with a view to discussing preliminaries in connection with the Dominion National Apple Show, to be held in Dunedin in 1917. These annual shows are to be held in rotation in each of the various centres, and are held under tho auspices of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers' Federation. Mr John Bennetts explained tho objects of the meeting. It was pointed out that legislation was promised this session providing (amongst other things of vital importance to fruitgrowers) for an annual orchard tax of Is per acre, on all commercial orchards, this tax yielding a total of over £2250 per annum. This sum will be handed to the New Zealand Fruitgrowers' Federation with which all provincial and district associations will be affiliated, and will be utilised for the development of markets, both local and export, and for purposes generally towards the development of the fruit-growing industry throughout the dominion. . ... , A vigorous advertising campaign will t>«
conducted throughout the dominion, with a view to popularising the applo as an article of necessary and economical diet, and the annual shows will form an important feature in this direction. Mr H. Turner was appointed secretary, and the following City Committee was set U p. —Messrs J. Monerief, F. G. Duncan, J. Louden, N. Vanes, J. T. Hinton, G. M. Marshall, J. Duthie, W. Scott, and W. T. Goodwin (district orchard instructor), with power to acid to the number Each Otago Fruitgrowers' Association will be asked to appoint two delegates to act in conjunction with the City Committee, and all local bodies and societies will be approached with a view to enlisting their sympathies and the formation of an executive committee which will ensure the successful organisation of the show.
