RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

D.J.C. WINTER MEETING. Fihst Day—Thuesday, June 1. The Dunedin- Jockey Club’s winter meeting was opened in bad weather. Rain overnight was followed by showery and threatening weather. The attendance was fairly largo, but speculation fell off a good deal in comparison with last year. As a result of the rain the track became a bit on soft side, but provided fair going. The racing was always full of interest, although no particularly exciting finishes took place. The rain overnight and during the morning resulted in the field for the Hurdles cutting fairly deep into the going. The field travelled in close order throughout, except that Hap Dha, dwelling at his fences, dropped away. Rounding into the straight, Kilmony, who was in charge, ran wide, and carried out Glenthorpe. Crib, travelling strongly, drew up at the last fence, and finally won easily by a length from Kilmeny, who boat Rougahoro by over two lengths, with Glenthorpe a neck away, and Commotion next. From a good lino Do Aar was slow to move, and Fitzosborno was the first to show out in the Brighton Handicap. Sir Jlarnu ton joined the leaders at the home turn, and boat Bellshire with something in hand besides the narrow margin at the winning post. Oanrobur slipped his bridle during the race The Birthday Handicap field got away in good lino at the first attempt, except

that Glenongly lost several lengths. Quirinus assumed the role of pacemaker up to the far turn, but Rorko's Drift, despite his weight, was alwavs up with the leaders. The top weight led Itingform into the straight, and won by a neck. Neuroma, who was always well up, finished over two lengths away third; and Ardenvhor, who moved up four furlongs from homo as if he was going to have a say in the finish, fell away again, and ran past the post two lengths outside a place. .Findhcrn was well up all the way for over a mile, and, after dropping away as they approached the straight, came" on again as they ran from the distance, and finished fourth. Then came Magdala and Tannhauscr. Rorko s Drift ran a lino race, and, adopting the same tactics as when a winner in Oamaru, he was always helping to make the pace, and stayed out the journey despite the fact that the going was not held to be in his favour. Ringform ran like an improved horse, but Ardenvhor put up a disappointing display. Findhorn will always be better served over a shorter course. The Otago- Steeplechase was full of incident. Black Sea threw out at the first jump, and the post and rails following deleted Recharge from the field. Oratanu came down at the third fence. The others were jumping fairly well until reaching the stand double, where The Brewer nearly bumped off his pilot, but a good recovery saw him regain his seat Tommy fell at the second sod wall, and The Brewer unsealed his rider at the same jump. _ Coseshot spoiled an apparently good winning chance by running off at the second of the double in the back stretch. Grey Renown came down at the post and rails near the fourfurlong post. This series of mishaps left Carnmore in front, and he won by six lengths, easing up, from Hcatherlea, who beat The Gunner by over 20 lengths. Tl: • placed lot were well out in front of the remounted Grey Renown and Cascehot. The stewards held a meeting after the race, and fined the rider of the winner £o for careless riding, based on crowding at the povt and rails and the third last tence from home. In the Tradesmen's Handicap, Obsono and Red Charm were the first to show out, and as they approached the home turn they wero attended by Miss Finland and Clynelish. The last-named lost his place before reaching the turn, appearing to be bumped or cut out. Obsono led Miss Finland into the straight, but at the distance Marsa ran through and won by over three lengths from Twelfth Night, who beat Caraid Dileas by two lengths. Then came Hornbeam, Miss Finland, and Buller. Buller was well up, but fell away at the business end, and Red Charm also failed to hold her place. Redshire never got dangerous, and Obsono stopped to nothing over the last furlong. Debonaire fell over his rider after going out for the Hunters' Steeplechase, and did not take any further part in the race. For'ard led out, and after leading past the stand threw out at the sod wall. Wellwood led into the course proper, but Ikowai ran past and won well from Wellwood, wdio managed to keep St. Pedro at bay. Dear Annie finished a moderate fourth. The card concluded by a good finish seeing Brooksdale stalling off All Ready in the Winter Welter. Glenongley, as in the Birthday Handicap, making up a lot of ground after apparently boing hopelessly, out of it. The totalisator investment.? amounted to £16,705 10s, as against £24,661 for the opening day last year, and the war tax on dividends totalled £375 19s 6d. Caseshot establ'shed a good lead, and Oratanu fell at the brush double at the back of the course. Here Caseshot and The Gunner were six lengths in front of Grey Renown and The Brewer. Going to the water jump The Gunner was showing the way to Caseshot, and then at an interval of 10 lengths came The Brewer and Grey Renown, while Tommy was a length further back. Caseshot showed the way to the stand double to Grey Renown. Tho Brewer nearly unseated his rider, but Easton made a brilliant recovery. Tommy fell at the sod wall, and Caseshot was still well out in front as they ran across the small sod wall at the bottom turn, whejo Tho Brewer unseated his rider. Caseshot ran off at the second double in tho back stretch, leaving The Gunner in charge from Cammore, the pair being four lengths in front of Grey Renown. The last-mentioned fell at the pest and rails at the four-furlong post, and The Gunner also made a_ faulty jump. This left Oarnmoro well out in front from Heathei 1< a at the last fence. Oarnmoro finally won by six lengths from ITeatherlea, with The Gunner 30 lengths away third. Then came the remounted Grey Renown and Caseshot. Time. 6mm 42sce. Baritone dropped back a little as they ran to the far turn, Ogier being in front, and Brooksdale moved into second place. Once in the straight Brooksdale camo on to win by a head from All Ready, with Lady Trent five lengths away, third, then came Gnome, Ogier, and Glcnongley. Time, imin 46sec. Second Day— Saturday, June 3. The Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting was concluded in excellent weather. A strong summer-like sun dispersed a heavy overnight frost, but the going was a bit greasy at the outset. The attendance was very much larger than on the opening day. In the Fairfield Hurdles Rongahere at once took up the running, and had Glenthorpe, Copper Boy, and Pure Gold as his nearest attendants, whilst at the end of a half-mile both Kilmeny and Crib were running over a dozen lengths away from tho leaders. As they rounded the top turn Kilmeny and Crib were moving up, but in tho run home Rongahere drew out and won by nearly three lengths from Crib, who wore Kilmeny down and beat him by a head. Glenthorpo was a fairly good fourth, and Commotion next. Crib ran an excellent race under his big weight, and, despite his load, must have been dangerous over a longer course. The advantage the top weights had to concede over the last half of the journey mad© their task doubly hard. The field straggled a bit after the rise of the barrier in the Silverstream Handicap, Seamaid, Firegod, and Canrobur getting badly away. The leading division along the back were Volspiel, Samiel, Lion, Fitzosborno, and Moneymaker. Bellshire fell as they ran past the three-furlong post, and Volspiel and Samiel chopped away. Moneymaker was in charge before reaching the straight, and, stalling off Fitzosborne in a good finish, won by a neck. Lion finished nearly two lengths off, and then came Take Down, Moidant, Fiery Cross, and Quickshot in a bunch. Rorke's Drift, Marsa, and Ringform, a trio near the rails, got well away at the rise of tho barrier in the Provincial Handicap, and ran to tho first turn over two lengths in front of Ardenvhor. Findhorn moved up going along the back, but dropped back second last. Rorke's Drift fell away a bit after passing the sixfurlong post, where Ringform and Marsa were in charge. Brooksdale struck trouble approaching the five-furlong post, and lost several lengths. Ringform led Marsa towards the straight, where Rorke's Drift moved into third place, and was closely attended by Findhorn. Marsa fell away when heads were straightened for home, and at the distance Rorke's Drift challenged Ringform, while Findhorn was close up on the rails. A good finish saw Ringform stall off the top weight and win by a neck. Findhorn faded out in the last few strides, and finished two and a-half lengths away. Then came Marsa, a bad fourth, and Magdala next. Findhorn appeared to get a bad passago, and covered a good deal of ground up to the home turn. The top weight ran a splendid race under his weight, but his chance was assisted by the advantage obtained at the rise of tho barrier, which materially assists those on the rails of an eight-furlong start. It was difficult to distinguish the field as they jumped away at the start of tho Wingatui Steeplechase. Caseshot led Tommy, The Brewer, and Oratonu. Caseshot led over the water, where the spectators were allowed to block the view. Kintailshore joined the leaders as tho horses entered the course proper, but ran off at the second of the stand double. The sod wall found Caseshot missing from the field, and Oratonu was left in charge from Black Sea as they came into the course, proper. Going along tho back Recharge and Carnmore moved up. The post and rails tipped up Oratonu and Carnmore. Recharge ran past Black Sea going to tho water for the second time. From that out Recharge had matters all his own way, and won easily by eight lengths from Black Sea, who beat The Brewer by twenty lengths. Tommy, who commenced to fall away seven furlongs from home, finished a bad fourth, and Heatherlca was next. None of the unseated riders was hurt. The Wairongoa Handicap field did not get too well away, and the horses spread quickly as soon as tho barrier rose. Icilma at once shot out. and led Buller and Redshire, with Obsono next, as they entered the straight. Inside the distance Buller wore down Icilma and heat him by a neck, with Redshire a good two lengths off, third, and Obsono close up, fourth. None of tho others was anything like dangerous in the last couple of furlongs. Twelfth Night appeared to get well away, but failed to hold his place. Both he and Buller were moving in on the outside as the tapes rose, but Twelfth Night was apparently cut out. St. Pedro lost a lot of ground at tho start of the Hunters? Steeplechase. Daltpn was piloting the way with For'ard and Debonaire as they camo to the stand double, where For'ard struck, and. cutting his off fore fetlock very badly, was pulled up. Dalton was still showing the way as the field was coming back to the course at. the seven furlong post, whore he threw out. Wellwood then took charge, and led along tho back, with Dehonairc and Ikowai in close attendance. Wellwood led over the. Inst fenoo, which Dobonairo failed to negotiate. Wellwood stalled off Ikowai, and heat him by a length, with St. Pedro a had third. The winner occasionally works in a hansom cab, and was apparently improved Ivy his first race at the meeting. Ikowai put in ® faulty jump at the post-and-rails, four fur-

! longs from home, and otherwise must have j been a bit more dangerous. Canrobur refused to leave tho mark at | tho rise of the barrier in tho Invcrmay Welter, and Baritone got badly away. Ogier, l on the rails, led out from Pleasure Bent I and Lady Trent, arid as they approached tho i home turn Ogior fell away, and Neuroma I moved up to tho leaders. Neuroma was in | charge inside tho distance, and, comfortably I stalling off Sir Hamilton, boat him by noarlv ! two lengths. Lady Trent was over a length ! away, third, and then camo All Ready, Glen- ■ ongley, Pleasure Bent, and Redovva. This j event finished a quietly enjoyable meeting, | and also the Dunedin Jockey Club's season. ; Speculation was much brisker than on the opening day, and tho attendance appeared i to rank as one of tho best ever seen on : tho course. Mr A. G. Wood's work at tho barrier was j an all-round success. Ho wa/s not too happy j with his effort in tho Wairongoa Handicap, however, as at tho release of the tapes some j horses were standing up flat-footed and others | were moving in. Mr Wood had some awk- ! ward horses to handle in some of the races, and should have ordered some of the bad actors promptly to the outside. The sum of £26,371 was put through the ! totalisator, as compared with £24,655 for the | second day last year. The total amount put ; throusrh the machine for the two days was ! £43.076 10s, ns against £49,316 for the win--1 tor meeting of 1915. The war tax on Saturday camo to £593 8s 6d. The taxes to be paid by tho club in connection with the meeting are: —General tax, £lll7 5s 6c!; dividend tax, £969 8s 6d; tax on stakes, £3l 16s;—total. £2llß 10s. CIIRISTCHURCH, June 2. At a meeting of the board of the New Zealand Trotting Association this afterroon a letter was received from the West Australian Trotting Association asking the board's opinion in regard to a conference to endeavour to bring about uniformity in the rules in Australia and New Zealand. The president (Mr P. Selig) said he would be asking for leave of absence, and would be proceeding to Sydney. If he could do anything while there for the New Zealand Trotting Association he would be only too pleased to do so. It was decided to write to the West Australian Association and the New South Wales Trotting Club giving the dates on which the president would be in Sydney, lcavinq- it to them to arrange a conference if they thought it advisable. The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote forwarding a copy of the letter which he had sent to the Northern Trotting Horseowners. Breeders, and Trainers' Association in reference to that body's dispute with the Auckland Trotting Club, and stating that after investigating he did not feel called upon to interfere in a matter that had already been dealt with by the governing body. The president said that it was gratifying to find that the board's position as the court of appeal in the sport was recognised bv the Minister. Tho Forbury Park Trotting Club forwarded particulars of an inquiry into the running of Nora M'Kinney. Tho stewards had decided to take no action, but considered the case suspicious. It was decided to write to the club pointing out that its procedure was wrong under the rules, as the inquiry should have been conducted as on a protest. It was resolved —" That as soon as the Military Service Bill now before the House becomes law the resolution par-sod by the board declining to grant licenses to single men eligible for enlistment be rescinded." Tho President stated that he had been making inquiries regarding the finances of the association and the secretary had taken out some figures dealing with the board's position. Barrett brought up the question of re-handicapping as against fixed penalties. Some other clubs had adopted the system of re-handicapping, he .-aid, and though tho merits of these methods were a matter for academical discussion, those proficient in tho science of handicapping had remarked on the injustice possible under the system of fixed penalties. This was apparent in connection with tho club's Easter meeting, at which the penalty for winning the Great Easter Handicap was 141 b. Two horses might run a dead heat, or a horse might win by 10 yards, but in both cases the penalty would bo the same, and an obvious injustice was created. In the Stewards' Handicap and the New Zealand Cup there was no possibility of this. The Chairman (Mr Buckley) said the handicapping question had boon thrashed out time after time, and however the question was looked at or put there wore difficulties.
