ATHLETICS.

OTAGO CENTRE, AMATEUR ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION. Tho annual meeting of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was hold on tho 21st inst. Mr E. Rosevear presided over a small attendance. The President said that from the statoTho President said that from the statement of receipts and expenditure they would see that there was a balance of £1 2s Bd, as compared with £2 4s 4d the previous year. The expenses incurred in connection with the patriotic sports had been only £57, and it was very encouraging to think that they had done their bit in the way of directly assisting the funds by raising £l5O. _ In connection with the Otago championship meeting-, there was a loss of £B. Ho did not know whether they could chide themselves on having incurred a loss. Whether the public supported them or not, they had to encourage the young fellows to train, and tho loss incurred was not a loss from tho point of view of what the centre stood for. Ho had compared the matter of expenditure with the previous year, and did not think that they could be charged with greater expenditure in the year just past than in the previous year. Tlie affiliated clubs were the same as previously. The winter sport of harrierism had been very successful. Members would remember that there was a good deal of talk as to whether the New Zealand championships should be held or nob The council had decided to hold the meeting in conjunction with the Wellington _ Centre, and in consequence Otago had selected a team. Their representatives had done them credit, Otago not having lost any prestige by them. Tho speaker referred to the engagement of Mr Lloyd Phillips at the Otago Roys’ High School as a step in the right direction with regard to physical training. Mr Phillips developed the all-round boy, and it promised well for tho future. At tho previous annual meeting it was reported that 70 men had gone from the various amateur athletic and harrier clubs in Dunedin to tho front in response to the call of Empire. Now he had to report that 263 members had gone, representing no less than 60 per cent, of the total members.—(Applause.) That was an answer to tho statement that the sport stood in tho way of recruiting. The sport, ho thought, was the best sport to develop the physical and moral being of man. Of course, where so inany men had gone there must bo many casualties. It had not been possible to got a complete list, but the number was over 50. The president bore testimony to the work of the various officials of tho club, particularly the secretary, with whom it was a pleasure to be associated. The motion for the adoption of the balance sheet 'was seconded by Mr P. Doull, and carried.

Mr J. C. Cusack wrote on behalf of himself and his co-delegate to the New Zealand Council (Mr Pollock), stating that there had not been enough business during the last four months to hold a meeting of the council. but one was to be held to arrange for the annual meeting. Every centre had been so busy with patriotic meetings and queen carnivals that everything else took a back scat. The only snorts meeting of any note during the past season was the championship, the net profits (over £80) going to the Wounded Soldiers’ Fund. —Iho letter was received. Office-bearers were elected as follows: — President, Mr E. Rosevear (re-elected); vicepresidents —Messrs L. Sanderson. R. Martin C. Frye, sen., T. Paterson, J. T. Hamaim, and O W. Clarke; bon. auditor, Mr A .G. Melville (rc-elected); bon. handicappsr, Mr A. Mercer (re-elected); bon. starter, Mr W. Rudkin (re-elected) ; delegates to the New Zealand Council —Messrs J. C. Cusack and J. IT. Pollock (re-elected) ; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr P. W. Breen (re-clcctcd). Before closing the business, the Chairman remarked that Mr Doull would not be present with them again. They would miss him greatly, and he (the speaker) must express the centre’s appreciation of the work Mr Doull had done for amateur athletics in the city. He was sure that wherever Mr Doull wont ho would follow up the interests of athletics as he had done in Dunedin. Mr Doull replied, acknowledging the remarks made and paying a tribute to the value of athletics. HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS. FINE ATHLETIC EXHIBITION. The Otago Boys’ High School annual athletic sports were held on the Carisbrook Ground on Saturday, commencing shortly after 1 o’clock. The weather was very pleasant. A lengthy programme of events was participated in by a largo number of the pupils, and it was evident from the form shown by not a few of the competitors that they will probably bo heard of on the athletic field in coming years. Trcahy put un a good performance in polo jumping; Lockhart broke the school record in the long jump, and Glasso is one of the most promising runners the school has produced for some years. The ground was nob in the best of condition, or the hoys might have done even bettor than they did. The tug-of-war was an interesting event. The pull imposes a severe strain on the hoys, but its safeguard is the time limit of throe minutes. The Rector (Mr W. J. Morrell) and the masters of the school were present, together with a large number of the parents, some of the old hoys, and a host of present pupils, the last-named following the fortunes of their class-mates in the various events with the keenest interest. It was noteworthy that two events for old hoys had to bo dropped out, of the programme, not on account of any lack of interest in the school by former pupils, hut by reason of the fact taht many old hoys have gone away to fight the battles of the Empire. Altogether. the programme of sports was very enjoyable, 'the handicapping produced many close contests. The Caversham Baud provided excellent music during the afternoon. The management committee deserves a word of praise for its decision to devote the whole of

the takings—gate, afternoon tea, and other sources—to patriotic objects. Wo are indebted to two of the senior pupils (G. M. Moir and W. P. Morrell) for information courteously furnished to our representative. Tho following are the results: — HIGH JUMP (Open).— J. A. Paterson (4-in), sft 2gin, 1; W. Foa (4in), sft iJdn, 2 1 W.
