PHENOMENAL PRICES FOR TASMANIAN APPLES.

Mr T. Boss-Walker, Hobart, reports the sale in London by Messrs Edward Jacobs and Sons, of 7530 cases and packages of Tasmanian apples and pears, ex R.M.S. Maloja, as follows; — Apples.—Cleopatra. 17s to 13s 6d; Sturmcr Pipp’n, 16s to 12s; Scarlet Nonpareil, 16s 6d to 12s 6d; New Town Pippin, 13s 6d; Rokewood, 14s 9d to 12s; Hollow Crown Pippin, 14s to 13s; Crow Egg, 14s to 12s sd; French Crab, 13s; Stone Pippin, 13s 6d to 12s. Pears.- —Winter Nclis, small trays (containing about one-fourth of a bushel) 13s; patent cases (containing about two-thirds of a bushel! £1 10s; Glou Morceau, patent cases £1 5s to £1 2s 6d (over-ripe); Easter Beurre, cases 15s (over-ripe). • A few parcels and portions of parcels in inferior condition realised somewhat lower prices than the above. The Maloja delivered her cargo in very good order, on the whole, though there were a good many cases “wet.” Some of the Scarlet Nonpareils and many of the Stunner Pippins were too largo. Dessert apples, such as these, arc not very saleable over the 2* in grade—i.e., from 2£in up to 2|in. The “trade” does not care much for the larger grades, and they arrive in softer condition and much more bruised than the smaller grades. Considering that the market was heavily stocked with strawberries at the time that the Maloja’s cargo _ of Tasmanian apples was sold, the prices realised were quite phenomenal.
