DEADLY SNIPERS. WELLINGTON, July 15. Private C. 11. Canton, of the laranaki Company of the W cllington Infantry, is suffering from a bullet wound in the foot. He received his injury in the Cape Hellcs fight during the advance on Achi Baba on May 9. .... “ We wore sent into the firing line from the rear,” he said. “ The Now Zealand Infantry lost heavily in the open country. The Turkish Infantry are not great shots, but their snipers were. The latter were mostly Germans. They used to paint their faces and rifles green- to prevent us from distinguishing them. Wo caught one man who was concealed alone. Ho had enough supplies for a month and 14 cases of ammunition. When I was hit I was resting, and not firing at all.” Private Canton concluded by declaring tlie opinion that New Zealand should send out more reinforcements than wore being sent. He added that several of the returned wounded had voltinteercd to return to the front, and were to go after a month’s furlough.
