LOSS OF AN ARM.

LIEUTENANT PEAKE’S WOUND. WELLINGTON, July 15. Lieutenant Peake, of Cambridge, belonging to tho 16th (Waikato) Regiment, is said to be the only man on board tho Willoohra who has been so unfortunate as to lose a limb. He was on shore for only a few hours in all. The Waikatos were on tho left flank, where they were exposed to

heavy rifle, artillery, and machine gun fire, and were subjected, as were all the others, to the attention of the snipers, who, knowing the ground—which was broken and covered with shrub, —were able to make themselves an extremely unpleasant quantity. Lieutenant Peake had been on shore only a very short time when he received a bullet wound through the right arm, just above the elbow. He managed to get back to the ambulance, but it was found necessary later to amputate the arm. By the afternoon of the same day, Lieutenant Peake stated, all the officers of his regiment had been put out of action. Lieutenant Peake spoke feelingly of what he described as the magnificent behaviour of the New Zealand non-coms. • and men during their first time under fire. They showed the greatest resource and daring, and there was no hanging back on the part of anybody. Referring to the Willochra’s trip, Lieutenant Peake said that not a life had boon lost coming through the Red Sea. The heat was intense, and one night 130d-og was registered on the bridge, but after that a glorious trip was experienced.
