MEAT FOR THE ALLIES
THE TOTAL PURCHASES. (Fkoii Ouh Own Cohuespondent.l WELLINGTON, June 18. Up till and including June 17 the New Zealand Government had paid for meat purchased on behalf of the Imperial Government £2,034,593. As payment is made on shipments, this money has been paid only for the moat actually despatched or loaded on steamers to sail. There must bo more than £3,000,000 worth of moat in stores in New Zealand ready for shipment. In view of the cry that is being raised in some localities, most recently in Auckland, about the allocation of space in outward steamers it is interesting to note the storage capacity available in the principal frozen meat districts. This is as follows; — Carcases. Wellington 675,000 Canterbury 640.000 Otago 165,000 Southland 310,000 Hawke’s Bay 250,000 Poverty Bay 280,000 Auckland 55,000 These figures indicate the capacity of the storage space under normal conditions. In this last season necessity has compelled the companies to pack the stores as densely as possib’e. even filling up passages, so that the stores held tens of thousands more sheep than they were built to hold.
