N.S. WALES DRINK BILL

SYDNEY, June 17

Archdeacon Boyce shows that the drink expenditure per head of population in New South Wales was £4 6s Bd, or an increase of 3s 9d, making the increase per head in the past five years 19s 9d. He attributes this to the wave of prosperity, which so greatly enlarged the people’a spending power, while shorter working hours afforded the workers more spare time. The biggest increases were in colonial beer and sparkling wines. He points out the baneful effects of drinking on the war, and earnestly stresses the need for drastic restrictions similar to what other countries have adopted.
