SUPREME COURT SITTINGS.
TIMARU, June 1. The criminal sittings of the Supremo Court were opened to-day. His Honor, in his charge to the grand jury, referred briefly to the cases on the list, making special comment with regard to the sexual cases. The court was occupied all day with cases of alleged robbery by Joseph Sturgeon and Patrick Joseph Sullivan. INVERCARGILL, June 1. The criminal sittings of the Supremo Court wore opened this morning before Mr Justice Sim. 'Darcy Robert APDcvit.t, aged 20 years, and Norman Darcy Bryden, who absconded from the Invercargill Gaol, received six months’ imprisonment each, with hard labour. Eric Tuckwell Poole, aged 17 years, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a postal packet, and was ordered to pay £lO. John Donald M'Quarrie and Joseph Arthur Metzger were charged with breaking and entering a warehouse and stealing 70 bottles of ale, and also with receiving stolon property. They pleaded not guilty. APQuarrie was found not guilty on both charges, but Metzger was found guilty' of receiving. He was remanded for sentence. Juno 2. In the Supreme Court to-day Joseph Arthur Metzger, charged with breaking and entering, was admitted to probation for three years. Counsel for the accused stated that the man was anxious to go to the front, and his Honor replied that he saw no difficulty in the matter. Louis Fosbcndsr was charged with manslaughter, as a result of the death of A illiam Jackson. The accused’s motor car collided with a cart driven by Jackson, who was thrown on the road, sustaining fatal injuries. The prosecution alleged reckless driving, and that the accused was on the wrong side of the road. The accused was found guilty, and was remanded for sentence.
Otto Fritz von Roon was acquitted on a charge of cattle-stealing.
