AUSTRALIA’S SUGAR SUPPLY
SYDNEY, May 17
A conference of the Queensland, Victorian, and South Australian Commodities Boards was held to-day with the object of fixing tho price of sugar. Mr Knox, general manager of the Colonial Sugar Company, gave evidence that the stocks in Sydney and Melbourne would bo exhausted by the end of July; Bris-
bane’s supply wmiild cease at an earlier date, and Adelaide’s at a later. Ho estimated a shortage of 75,000 tons, and the company believed it would be necessary to import from 75,000 to 125,000 tons to carry on until July, 1916. Mr Knox maintained that the commission had no power to fix a price. Judge E dmunds asked Mr Knox if he objected to the commission inquiring into the company’s profits for the past year. Mr Knox said he thought it was quite futile and unnecessary, Tho conference agreed that the needs to the end of August could be supplied only by. importing, which ought to result in a reasonable profit to those concerned. It was admitted that the business should bo protected, and the conference would endeavour to fix a price. The conference decided not to alter the nrice of sugar.
