THE BATTLE OF KOLUSZKI.
LONDON, November 27. The Daily Telegraph’s Petrograd correspondent states that the battle of Koiuszki is the crowning victory in the Polish campaign. While the main German army was hurrying down from Thorn to Plock a strong force was thrown agaisrst Koiuszki (which is the junction of three railways), east of Lodz. The Germans knew that the main Russian force was attacking Czenstochowa, and believed that it would be impossible for the Russians to face about before Warsaw should fall. But the success with which the Germans had torn up the bridges and railways blocked their own game" and made the Russian advance upon Czenstochowa so difficult that her reserves v/ere still in the vicinity ol Lodz when news came of the threatened attack upon Warsaw. The Russian wing made a half- , turn, and battled its way towards the -German rear, driving the Germans for 30 miles in a single day, until finally it enveloped the right flank of the Germans in the Lodz district. Meanwhile the Russians broke the German centre north of Lodz, severing the right flank from the main body, which is now striving to hew its way northwards, but its chances of escape are slight. The German reserve army at Wtelun was set in motion too late, and the Russians were able to check its advance. Captured cannon and prisoners are already pouring into Warsaw. The latter include Prussian Guardsmen. Though they have received their winter clothing many arc maimed and disabled by frostbite.
