Mr George Bichan’s flaxmill at Otanoniorao was to recommence operations on Monday, employing 25 hands. This (says the Balclutha Free Press) should give a stimulus to the labour market there. A number of good bags of trout have been reported since the opening of the season, and one of these is far in excess of the early catches last season (says the Southland Times). The catch referred to was made bv Messrs Broad and Perry on Thursday, and the 22 fish lauded were taken from the Orcti, ihc Makarowa, and the Waikiwi. The total weight of the bag was 661 b, and the fish were excellently proportioned. They wore caught with MTvenzie minnows. _lt is also reported that Mr Studholm, fishing in llie Orawia, caught nine fish ranging from half a pound to three pounds, but it is stated that they were of poor condign.
