NEW ZEALAND TO AUSTRALIA

FARES AND FREIGHTS RAISED

SYDNEY, June 19.

From Monday the Union Company and the Huddart, Parker Company will increase their fares and freights. Saloon fares from Sydney to Auckland or Wellington will be raised by 8s single and 12s 6d return tickets, second saloon by 6s single and 10s return. Freights will be increased by a flat rate of Is per ton. Similar advances will be made on the Tasmanian run.

The increased steamship freight rates are in some cases as high.as 10s per ton. This is causing considerable comment, and is raising doubts as to the correctness of the blame being attributed entirely to the recent compulsory increases made in wharf labourers’ wages.
