TOLERATION OF ABUSES
LONDON, June 15. Dr Clayeshaw, lecturer at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, says that the tendency of modern civilisation is little more than the toleration of abuses. “We let off murderers in deference to public sentiment. We do not hang women because we are described as civilised. We treat crime as a disease, and we deal with it mildly. We also take beneficent care of fools, and endure inconveniences at the hands of strikers because our high civilisation suggests their toleration.’’
