COMPULSORY TRAINING.
MAXIMUM PENALTY INFLICTED. PAIIIATUA, Juno 17. One defaulter, now living at Longburn (Manawatu), did not appear at the court to-day to answer a charge of failing to attend the military camp at Takapau. A lot of previous convictions were put in. Captain M'Chrystal said he was pleased to say that the defendant was the only Territorial in the district w r ho refused to attend drill. Ho had given an enormous amount of trouble to the authorities, declaring'his intention not to render service. His action had the effect of causing dissatisfaction among other Territorials. Captain M'Chrystal asked that the defendant be deprived of his civil rights. He admitted that it was a hard thing to do. The Magistrate said he was not disposed to act on the suggestion of the captain, but fined the defendant the maximum penalty (£5) and costs (7sj, in default 28 days’ military detention at the Alexandra Barracks, Wellington.
