CLUTHA AND MATAU SHOW.
The annual show of the Clutha and Matau A. and P. Association was held at Balclutha on Friday. In marked contrast to the experience of other similar societies during the last few weeks, the day was beautifully line. As a natural result the show proved decidedly successful, the- attendance being very large,' the takings at the gate being £llß 14s, as against £ll4 19s 6d last year. I he entries also showed an increase on last year, the most marked accession being in the sheep section. Dairy produce entries, however, showed a falling-away. The following table
Most of the officials worked hard and to some purpose during the day, Mr G. V . W ood, the acting secretary, being particularly obliging mid courteous. homo difficulty arose, however, owing to the system of entering the awards in the tight iior.se classes in the Carrie book as the competitions, in which never Arikh till a late hour. Last night we were unable to obtain the results ot some half-dozen classes in the light homes. The show of draughts was not a particularly brilliant one, but in one or two instances some very fine animals were brought into the ring. There wore no aged stallions forthcoming, nor were there any brood mares. Only two two-year-old colts came forward, and both were only fair. The firstprize taken in the yearling colts was only fair, and, unfortunately, two of the colts entered failed to put in an appearance up to time. This was in a in os-sure regrettable-, as they were splendid young animals, and, in the opinion of the judge, quite worthy of first and second places. The three-year-old fillies were a fair lot, but the winner of the two-year-old fillies was an exceptionally good animal, which should make a champion some day. The winner of the yearling fillies was a rather line-quality animal, while in the dry mares there was one particularly good beast, the others in this class being rather below standard. There was also one really good colt in the six three-year-olds that carno forward. Though the second-prize winner was a good way behind him, still lie managed to catch the eye as an upstanding, likely-looking fellow. The light horses made a fair show, fhc
competition in some eases being very keen. Two nice ponies wore entered in the entire ponies, while the pony under 14 hands class attracted a really nice lot of animals, with not much to choose between first and second. In ponies under hands throe came forward, but one was disqualified for being over the height. Three 15-stone hacks were brought into the ring, the first-prize hack standing out by himself. The same thing occurred in the 13-stone hacks, while the winner among the 18 11-stono hacks was a fine beast showing plenty of breeding. The second horse was a good animal, but did not show the breeding of the winner, while the horse placed third, although a good stamp of animal, was beginning to show signs of work. The competition in cattle was not particularly strong in any of the classes, but the quality of the entries that were forthcoming was always up to a good standard, and in one or two instances was very good indeed, j Taken all round, the Ayrshires wore a very i fair class. The dry cows, any age, at- ! tractod only two entries, loth owned by I Mr John Campbell, Invercargill, and both were good specimens. The pair of cows i wore also a good typo,of the breed. The three-year-old bull was a nice-looking, wcll-set-up animal, while the Jirst three yearling bulls were very evenly matched and all of 1 good quality. There were no entries in I Holeteins or Jerseys, while the competition j in shorthorns was also slight, Mr U. I Murray, of Clydovale, practically having the | field to himself. There were only small entries in crossbred cattle, but it is worthy of note that the two-yea rc-rosebred heifers were pronounced the best that have been seen at the Clutlia Show. In dairy cattle the only outstanding exhibits were those brought forward by Mr R. CampbcJJ. The Judge (Mr John Miller, Maungatua) ! pronounced the Romney Marsh, in which competition was the strongest of any of the sheep sections, to bo a very good section indeed, the sheep being brought out in very good condition, the woo), considering the season, being particularly bright and clean, 'i he first prizetaker m the aged rams carried a nice even fleece, showing true Romney character. The second prize ram, although somewhat weaker in his wool on the back, was a typical sheep of the breed. The four-tooth rams, although fair sheep, were not considered equal to the aged rams, while in the two-totn rams the winner showed true Romney character, and carried a nice even fleece. The fault noticeable witli a good number of the exhibits was want of trucncss to type, both in wool and appearance This remark also applies to tho ewe hoggets, a large number of which, although well brought out, were lacking in character. In tho class for two two-tooth rams, the remarks made by the judge regarding the single two-tooth rams applied with equal force. The owe with lamb at foot was a nice lovel-woolled sheep, with a good even fleece. The second prize ewe, although a good animal, was shown with her wool very much out of condition. Some good sheep were shown in the class for two owes with lambs at foot, the prize animals being distinctly true to type and carrying nice fleeces. In both classes of ewe hoggets a number of the exhibits, although well brought out as regards condition and wool, were' lacking in character, tho first and second prize hoggets haying a decided advantage over the remaining exhibits in this respect. The judge of tho crossbreds considered the hoggets in this class fit to win at any show in the dominion. The crossbred sheep, taken all over, were an exceptionally good lot. There was a little lack of condition in the wet ewes, but that was the only fault in the section. Mr Adam Moffat’s first prize pen of hoggets were an exceptionally good lot. The four-tooth Leicosters were good as a class, and tho winner constituted tho outstanding feature of tho show of Leicester.-. The single ram hoggets were also a fair lot, competition y.r.’*irr 1,-een a"d the exhibits be’ng mostly strong, healthy animals of good type. Tho pair rams were hardly so good. The ewes were a very fair lot. but owing to the wet season suffered considerably in the wool. Of the pair of ewes tho judge remarked that be had never seen a pair of ewes put before him at a show with two lambs so well grown. There was little to divide the first and second awards in the single ewe hoggets. The pair owes wore good sheep,
but the second and third pens were illrnatehed. The Downs were a good lot, but excited no competition. Following is the prize-list: — CATTLE. Aysuires. Judge: Air A. AlFarlano (Dunedin).
