PALMERSTON A. & P. SHOW

The Palmerston and / Waihemo County Agricultural and Pastoral Association was favoured with fine weather for its thirtythird annual show at Palmerston on Friday. The-show ground is very prettily situated, and provided ample shelter for man and beast from the keen wind that blew all the afternoon. The attendance though large was by no record, the gate money amounting to £4l as against the record takings of £4B. ' There was an imposing display of motor cars on the ground, and a few side showmen added interest to the scene. The music of the local band added to everyone's pleasure. The entries all round were decidedly satisfactory, and the number of sheep entered was believed to constitute a record in the history of the show. The grand total of 426 was made up as follows: —Horses, 157; sheep, 131; cattle, 70; dairy produce and sundries, 55; doge, 13. The 'system of post entries in all classes and the consequent absence of any detailed official programme ,does not tend towards smoothness and harmony in the working of the show, and certainly makes the compiling of official results a difficult and laborious matter. Though the judging was commenced well before noon it was not completed in the hack section till close on 6 o'clock, when the bulk of the visitors had left. The feature of the cattle section was the Ayrshires, in which there were nearly 30 animals forward from the flocks of Messrs A. Gillies (Hampden) and J. Frew; (Herbert). Mr Gillies secured one championship with Reta V, and Mr Frew the other with his bull, General of Herbert, which has been putting up a fine record this season in winning championships at Christchurch and at Oarnaru, and the reserved championship at Duncdin. Reta V was third in her class at the' Oarnaru show this year. Mr Gillics's first prize yearling bull was being shown for the first time. His two two-year-old heifers were particularly fine animals, the winner having secured a number of firsts as a yearling last season. There were no shorthorns forward for competition. Mr R. Riddle, of Palmerston, had things pretty much his own way 'n the Channel Island classes. His champion bull, Undeans Fern Grove Prince, by Rimu out of Unde'an, was bred by Mr A. H. Haleombe, of Taranaki. His two-year-old heifer was adjudged the champion cow. The Mount Royal Estate was the only exhibitor of polled Angus cattle, and took one championship with Bengal Light and the other with Dear Diana. Messrs P. Gordon (Goodwood) and W. Nicholson (Hampden) showed some excellent types of the Holstein Fricsian. The female championship was awarded to Mr Nioolson's two-year-old heifer Queen Mary, which arrived too late to compete in her own class. The same breeder's bull, which was* first and champion in Oarnaru recently, was unable to'' compete owing to an accident. The draught horses showed an improvement on past years both in quality and in numbers, and in most of the classes there was satisfactory competition. Messrs Kenyon Bros. (Merton) were the principal prize-takers, and won the C.ydeedalo Society's medal with a two-year-old filly.. They "also owned the champion (illy. The championship for entire?! was annexed by Mr A. Aitchison, who also secured the ribbon for the best type of draught horse. Two of the best filled classes were those for two-year-old and three-year-old fillies. There were only three thoroughbreds forward the championship going to Mr A. Aiteheson. Taken all through the hacks were a good lot, and better than is usually seen at the show. Prominent among the successful exhibitors were Mr G Aitchison a.iid Douglas's trustees, but honours were well distributed. The list and 13st roadster or hack classes brought out particularly good rings. The presence of horses from about Dunedin added interest to some of the competitions. The sheen were undoubtedly the most conspicuous' success of the show, and in thorn the outstanding classes were the Holder Leicesters and the Corriedales. In both these sections a highly creditable standard was reached. The Mount Royal Estate entered the only specimen of the merino breed, and it was awarded a first and championship. The same breeders secured both the Border Leicester championships and a number of first places m competition with Mr J. Ross. ■ The aged ram which was adjudged the champion had a splendid head, and was of good general character. Low set in the legs, J>nd with a fine fleece, it. appeared a splendid animal for breeding purposes. The champion ewe was also an animal fit to compete in almost any company. Mr A. M'Lennan's three fourth-tooth English Leicester rams, the onlv example's of this tvpe, w<'!-c bred by Mr Murdoch, of Riversdale.' The Romn'eys were a good class, if hardlv so strong as the Leicesters and Corriedales. Messrs Rws and Sons eeeured both the championships. Mr H. O'Neill was another very successful exhibitor. The same two competitors and Mr J. Ross divided the honours in Corriedales. Mr J. Ross's champion ram was an animal of great size, carrying a very good fleece. The dairy produce and miscellaneous exhibits under that heading call for little comment, and seem rather to indicate that the advent'of homo separators and the dairy factory have not tended to faster fche homely art of butter-making. Mrs Walker (Palmerston) was the most successful exhibitor, and

attractive samples of her work which have won success at other shows. The following is the prize-list: CATTLE. Ayrshire. Judges: Mess re A. M‘Cabe (Peninsula) and T. Lewis (North-East Valley).
