IMPERIAL POLITICS
THE LAND POLICY. LONDON, November 19. Lord Lansdowne says the Government is doing its best to parade a nebulous land policy in order to distract attention from Ulster. The land question is not the preserve of any party. Agriculture has been neglected, and all parties should hold out a helping hand to the farmers and give the labourers better housing with the prospect of becoming land owners. A Royal Commission should be appointed instead of the partisan Land Committee. November 22. Mr Lloyd George, when attending the Oxford Union debate was greeted on his arrival by a shower of turnips. One smashed the window of his motor car, and the thrower was arrested. Many members of the union gave the speech, which dealt with the land problem, an ovation. A resolution condemning the Government’s land proposals was rejected by 654 votes to 586. The result is considered a personal triumph for Mr Lloyd George.
