THE AUSTRALIAN PRESS

MELBOURNE, November 14

A deputation from the Australasian Provincial Press Association asked Mr Cook to remove from the Electoral Act a number of restrictions on the press.

Mr Cook, in a sympathetic reply, said there ought to be a free press. A leading article which appeared in the Age was debated in the House for five hours. The article stated that before Hansard goes to press a proof of every member’s speech is presented to him, he is permitted to revise it in secret, and may alter it in any manner he pleases.

“After this, the infallibility of Hansard will live as a term of flagrant mockery.” A motion adjudging the writer of the article guilty of contempt, and excluding the Age representative from the parliamentary precincts until the paper tendered an apology, was rejected by 38 votes to 29.
