A FATAL SWIM

MELBOURNE, November 14

An argument arose in an hotel late last last night between two men, residents of Melbourne and Sydney respectively, as to the relative merits of the Yarra and the Paramatta Rivers as rowing courses. In the course of the dispute Dubos, aged 21, the Sydney protagonist, declared that he could swim acros the Yarra and back. Dubos swam across, and his companions shouted: “Wait there and we will bring your clothes over the bridge.” Dubos, however, plunged in again, and had nearly reached the opposite bank, when he was seized with cramp. His companions jumped in, but were soon in difficulties, and themselves had to be rescued. Dubos was drowned.
