FIRES IN WELLINGTON.

SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES. WELLINGTON, October 30. Batons were being manufactured for the police in the Stewart Timber Company’s j woodware factory in Courtenay place, which was found to be on fire last evening. At 5.15 there was no sign of fire, and at 6 o’clock the place was alight. Shortly after 3 o’clock this morning the ' police discovered fire in the upper floor of a brick building of two stories in Waterloo quay, belonging to the New Zealand Shipping Company, and used by

them for the storage of goods required for the use of their own vessels. A quantity of straw was found alight, and when the brigade arrived the flames had burned the edges of a pile of fibre matting. The ! fire was soon extinguished. The damag# was not extensive.
