SOUTHLAND LAND BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Southland Land Board vras held on the 23rd inst. The Commissioner (Mr G H. M. M'Clure) occupied the chair, and the following members were also present:—Messrs C. Robertson, J. Thomson, J. M'Lean, and J. King. Correspondence.— Ranger Collins forwarded a report on sections 11 to 17, block XI, Waikawa survey district, —The'matter was left in the hands of the Commissioner to deal with. Mary Kearney requested that the lease of section 376, Terepa, Estate, be made out in the name of her husband, Thomas Kearney. —The request was agreed to. Duncan Taylor, who holds a temporary license over islands in the Oreti River, applied for flax thereon.—Ranger Collins reported on the application, which was refused. The Invercargill Golf Club applied to purchase the tramway through sections 16, 17, and part 15, block XXI, Invercargill Hundred, 3 roods 31 poles. -It was decided to recommend the request to the Minister of Lands for approval. James M'Kenna applied for a temporary license over 5 agres in block VII, Longwood survey district, and offered 5s per annum.—Approved. Johanna Ambrose, the lessee of section 7, block XX, town of Gore, asked that the rent be reduced, as the recent Gore floods “ruined the section’s,chances of ever being a- building site.”—The application was refused. Thomas Ambrose! the lessee of section 7, block XVIII, town of Gore, complained that the rent was too high, and intimated that ho did not intend to sign the lease. — Received. Ranger Martin intimated that George I Robson, who had a hut on a small piece of unleased land in block I, MSendon district, was willing to accept a temporary license at 5s per annumi—Approved. Ranger Martin recommended that the land between sections 18 and 19, block I, Wendon survey district, be offered to adjoining owner 'on temporary license at £2 10s per annum. —Approved. James Walsh, solicitor, on behalf of the lessee and the sub-lessee of sections I and 2, block X, town of South Lumsden, applied for a reduction in rent as the present rent ; was considered “ tremendously high.”—The j implication was refused, but it was decided i to reduce the rent of £2 10s per annum on account of land washed away by flood. James Oaldcr applied for the lease of section 4, block VII. Campbelltown, for grazing, area 1 rood.—Approved. David Cooney; on deferred payment system.—Approved; commissioner to assess price. Section 8, block Ilf. Waikawa survey district, 288 acres 3 roods 10 poles. Goo. A. Johns; on cash system.—Approved. The application of William Silks to purchase for cash sections 35 and 36, blor-k X. Now River Hundred, comprising 139 acres 2 roods 23 polos, was approved. —Sawmill Area Transactions.— Messrs Perry Bros, applied for an extension of 12 months’ time to cut out their area 483. —Twelve months’ extension was granted at a rental of £5. A. R. Wallis applied for an extension of time to cut out area 558.—Nine months’ extension was granted from July 1, at a rental of £5. The Stewart Island County Council submitted proposals for expenditure of “thirds,” etc., for period Ist May to 31st July, 1913, £33 7s 6d. —Approval was given, and the receiver was authorised to pay over tho amount. —Plans for Approval.— The Chief Surveyor submitted plans and surveyors’ reports of Fortification and Knowsley Park Settlements, the former hav-

ing been surveyed by Surveyor Falkiner and the latter by District Surveyor Otway. The Commissioner that inquiries have been made re the timber on section 19, block I, Waikawa survey district, and that it is consequently advisable to withdraw the section from sale until the timber has been disposed of.—lt was decided to withdraw the land from application until the timber was sold.

The Commissioner reported that, on account of roads taken, etc., the area of section 53, block XVIII, Jacob’s River Hundred, has been reduced by 2 acres 2 roods 14 poles, and annual rent by Is, and that lease should be amended. —It was decided to amend the lease accordingly. The Commissioner reported that section 9, block 111, Mataura Town, had been taken for railway purposes, and the lease, which included section 10, should be amended.—lt was decided to amend the lease accordingly.—Southland Times.
