BOWING.

Tlie Otago Club this year has had a very considerable access to its membershipgreater than in the last few seasons, and comprising some extremely promising material. Some five or six members of the Permanent Artillery—sturdy, strapping fellows for the most part—have joined the dub. With the exception of Tipping, they are' all novices. Tipping has previously rowed for one of thq Christchurch clubs, and has a very good style, backed up by a strong physique. Among other of the novices are Chapman (who learned his rowing in Nelson) and Lake (a strong youth, who learned his at Oamaru while attending the Waitaki High School). The notices are being schooled in the fixed-seat boats, and under the careful coaching of the senior club members are gradually getting some idea of style. A few more nights of fixed-seat rowing will sec them fit to take a scat in an outrigger, and prepare themselves for the first club race for novices—the Mathcson Fours. At tho annual meeting of the N.Z.A.R. on Saturday night last J. M. Jackson (Auckland) applied for, and was refused, reinstatement as an amateur. Presumably this is tho J. M. Jackson who stroked the BlcnheTm Rowing Club’s successful crew in tho Champion Fours at Picton in 1905-1906 and again at Napier in 1907-1903.

THE WORLD’S CHAMPIONSHIP. LONDON, October 21. Albany has deposited £25 and has challenged Barry to row for the world’s championship and £2OO a-side in 1914. October 25. Barry is willing to race Albany for a minimum of £SOO a-side or any amount. October 27. Sporting Life states that Barry apparently desires to override the World’s Championship rules. It says he must accept Albany’s challenge within the stipulated period or forfeit the title.
