OAMARU STOCK MARKET. (From Ocb Ows Correspondent.) OAMARU, Octobdt- 25. The stock market still lacks life. There
arc buyers of well nigh, all descriptions of sheep, and, with the grass coming away well now, many farmers are desirous of stocking up, but with plenty of feed and the good prospects for both -wool and mutton no one cares to sell. A number of small lines of full and failing-mouthed ewes, with lambs, have changed hands at from Ids up to 13s, all counted, according to condition and percentage of lambs. A line of first cross two-tooth ewes was sold at 20s, and ewe hoggets have found ready buyers at 22s fid and 235. First cross station lambs have boon taken at 13s fid for delivery at the end of February, and 13s has been given for three-quarterbred lambs for forward delivery. Fat wethers have been sold in lines at 25s and 235, the lower figure "being for two-tooth lightweights. There has been practically nothing- doing in store cattle, which are in request, and maintain their values. Fat cattle are still in short supply, and prime steer beef is worth 35s per 1001 b, and prime heifer beef 32s fid. Good quality dairy rows, in profit, arc in demand, and worth up to £l2, but there are none offering. At a clearing sale this week a herd of 20 medium quality cows .realised an average of £8 Ids, the top price being £lO. SOUTHLAND STOCK MARKET. (From Our Ows Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL. October 22. At the Wallacetown stock sale the yarding of fat cattle was not a large one. The majority were good bullocks, but an occasional pen of prime heifers and cows was also yarded. There was a very large attendance of country butchers present, and a number who could not attend had buyers operating on their behalf. Firm beef sold readily at from ofis to 37s per 1001 b; good quality, at 34s to 355; and unfinished at 39,5 to 31s. Fresh cows averaged about the saihe. The whole yarding was disposed of. There was only a small entry of fat sheep, the quality, however, being extra good. There was the same demand as was shown for cattle, local butchers operating strongly. Prices were very good, and taking the market all round, prices were better than for many years past. One or two pens of very sound, heavy wethers sold as high as 35s Id, while ordinary two and four-tooths, that would have been readily sold at 24s some three months ago, were easily disposed of at yesterday’s sale at 29s fid to 355. A few pens only of ewes were varded, and prices for these ruled as high us 31s lOd. The top prices obtained for fat wethers and owes arc records for Wallacetown. Although beef is high, bullocks fetching up to £ls 15s, prices are lower than obtained two years ago, when prime ox beef touched 40s per 1001 b. Indications are that, owing to a shortage of fat stock, prices will still further rise. In consequence of the continued high prices of stock, the local butchers have raised the price of meat by a penny all round, and have decided to continue hawking. An extra half-penny per lb is also to Do charged for any booked meat. , October 25. Business in stock circles continues fairly gcod in all branches, with the consequence that prices have done st 'l higher than those lately recorded—in fact, at the Wallacetown vards on Tuesday a few pens of fat wethers brought the very high price of 355, this being a record for Southland, while u large part of the entry changed hands at priced from 30s to 32s' fid. Slightly inferior and unfinished wethers also brought high prices, this class being sold' at from 26s fid to 28s fid. It looks as if fat sheep would continue high for some time to come. Lambing all over is very good, and, u.s a consequence, the supply of dry ewes will not bo heavy this season, and this, no doubt, will have a. hardening effect on the price of fat sheep for the next few months. The yarding of well-bred fat cattle is not so large as was the case during the few previous sales. It consisted of a few pens of really good bullocks. The demand for this class was also keen, and values firmed somewhat on last week's prices, one or two lines bringing as high as 37s per 1001 b. Business passing in store sheep is slack, very few offering, as the grass is coming away -weil, ami there is a splendid inquiry for all classes of store sheep, and anything offering is readily picked up at very linn prices. The demand for good forward store bullocks is stronger, and a gcod number of (his clues have changed hands during the past week at up to 6s tier head over lust week's rates. Small and ill-bred stuff, however, has been hard to quit, and at Wallacetown sale on Tuesday r good deal of this class yarded was turned out unfold. The demand for good dairy cows s-hill continues, but not quite co keen as a few weeks ago, although the price for good yoang sorts is nut any less than earlier in the season.

THE MONEY MARKET. The New Zealand Trade Review states that the banking returns fail to exhibit any return to easier conditions. The following comparison of deposits and advances shows the position briefly and clearly; Excess of Quarter. Deposits. Advances. Deposits. Kept., 1!)13 ... £23,739,004 £22,196,722 £1,642,372 June, 1913 24,557,493 22,578,680 1,978,813 Sept., 1912 ... 23,795,615 22,160,643 1,634,972 .Sept., 1911 ... 23,954,521 21,431,660 2,522,861 The balance of deposits shows decided reduction on the earlier periods, which is brought about, chiefly by the reduction in deposits. This balance is now a very light one for ordinary working purposes, and taking the other features of these returns into consideration, leaves the banks very little for lending out. Another somewhat unfavourable (dgn is the contraction in note circulation, which looks as if trade was not keeping up lo normal. With the usual season’s demands for assistance which are now current, tho banks have full employment for all available funds, a«nd money is unlikely to become any easier for the next few months. There is a decided measure of improvement; noticeable in business generally now. September returns are reported to lie well ahead of tho corresponding month last year, a.nd there is a more cheerful tone and more activity generally. The general prospects for trade appear bright and promising. INVESTMENT JsTOC K A October 25. National Bank—Buyers £5 7s, sellers £5 Bs. Bank of New Zealand—Buyers £lO 7s 6d, sellers £lO 17s 6d.
