A Royal Commision, with Lord Loreburn as chairman, has been appointed to report on what changes are desired in the relationship between the railway companies and the State, apart from the safety of working and the conditions of employment.
October 24. The appointment of the Railway Commission has created surprise. Some of the Conservative papers suggest that it is part of Mr Lloyd George’s attack on the land.
It is understood that the commission will discuss fares, rates, and the question of nationalisation. The'capital value of the railways is estimated at £1,770,000,000, and the average dividend in 1912 was £4 5s 6d per cent., as compared with £4 10s Id in 1911.
Tire members of the commission are: Lord Derby, Sir Harry Primrose, Sir Wil- • liam Plender, the Right Hon. Frederick Hugh Jackson, Mr Rowland E. Prothero, Mr David J. Shackleton, Mr Arthur Balfour, and Mr Cutler, of Sheffield.
