CONSPIRACY TO DEFRAUD

LONDON, October 20. The trial of F. R. Shackleton and Thomas Garlick on a charge of conspiring to defraud Lord Ronald Gower, Mr Frank Hird, and Miss Josephine Browne has begun. Miss Browne admitted that she had an affection like a mother’s for Shackleton. October 24. The jury, after 10 minutes’ retirement, found Shackleton and Garlick guilty on all the counts. Mr Justice Horridge, in sentencing Shackleton to 15 months’ hard labour and Garlick to nine, said that the former, besides his violation of commercial morality, had impoverished an affectionate and confiding lady (Mrs Browne).
