MARINE OFFICERS
GRI EVANCES VEN TILATED
LONDON, October 25. The officers Peninsular and Oriental Company have notified their intention to discontinue their cervices until the Imperial Merchant Service Guild adjusts the grievances regarding inadequate pay, inadequate provision for old age, and excessive overtime. Out of 40 officers in Britain 30 have resigned, and the remainder have pledged themselves not to fill their places. The guild claims that the bulk of the officers abroad share the views of those who have resigned. The sailings of the Novara and Nankin on Tuesday, and of the Arcadia on Wednesday are dependent on a satisfactory answer. The resignations will become effective on Monday. The guild believes that the Peninsular and Oriental Company will amicably settle the matter at an early date.
October ‘it. The Peninsular and Orient Company denies having received any representations from tire officers since last spring, when an improved scale of pay was adopted.
