LIVERPOOL RAILWAY DISASTER
OVERWORKED SIGNALMAN. LONDON, October 24. Thompson, in his evidence at'-the Livers pool inquest, stated that he worked d 8 levers and, 22 instruments and attended to two telephones. The boy’s duty was soleij ■$ to book the trains, but he availed himself of the boy’s assistance, otherwise it would have been impossible to carry out hi* work. He had unsuccessfully applied 20 years ago for an assistant signalman. Railway officials denied that they knew that boys were assisting tho signalman, but the traffic inspector admitted that aa additional signalman during busy hour* was necessary for the public safety. The jury found that the accident wu due to Thompson’s error of judgment, and a verdict of “Accidental death” was re- r turned. - ■ October 25. The jury recommended the appointment of qualified assistance in the signal box, also means of- warning drivers when approaching the signal.
