“ THE WAR DEVIL ”

ANGLO-GERMAN RELATIONS. j __ LONDON, April 21. i Mr Israel Zangwill, in a remarkable article in the Chronicle, entitled “The War Devil,"’ pictures statesmen primed with culture, Christianity, and peace, and yet condemned to build not God’s Kingdom, but the devil’s. He says that England and Germany are playing the war game like a game of cards, trumping each other’s lead. With the baleful shadow of Bismarck looming over Europe terrorstricken England throws herself into the arms of Ruesia, sinking perforce to the level of her barbarian swain. . Mr Zangwill adds :—“ We have all the cost of greatness, yet no greatness, and the same spiritual blight hung over the bulk, of Europe, when united Europe nerved itself to demonstrate against Montenegro. Since the Hague Conference was established the bloodiest battles have been fought, and the British colonies, which have long been the languorous abodes of peace, have embraced conscription and are building battleships. Arbitration could take us no further, and love of the law must yield to the toll of Jove. If Germany desires our territory she must have it. There is no reason other than the sword why Britain should possess one-fourth part of the globe. No law <f Sinai or Calvary has laid it down that Australia or Egypt should be British. The All Red route means the route of blood. Germany must also yield AlsaceLorraine, and establish the open door to her possessions.’’
