MISSING MILLIONAIRE

LONDON, April 14. The Martin case is causing much newspaper excitement. Mr Martin left the Automobile Club at 11 o’clock on Thursday night, stating | that he had an appointment with a lady. He was seen hailing a taxi-cab in SC James street. A workman found his pocket book at 5 o’clock next morning in the Belvidcre road—a poor-class neighbourhood. The sum of £llOO is offered as a reward for information as to the whereabouts of Mr Martin. April 15. A small gold chain was di-covered inside Mr Martin’s opera hat. Tin.- finder states that the hat appeared to have been carefully placed on the road. It was undamaged, but was a little soiled. An insurance policy for £BOO has been discovered. The police are considering the possibility of Mr Martin being in hiding. Reuter’s Agency states that Mr Martin’s firm in Tennessee has failed and tiled a petition in bankruptcy. Another message says that the petition was filed to protect the firm during Mr Martin’s absence. The assets \ are stated to be 430,140d01. and the liabilities 403,163d01. (a surplus of £5400). Scotland Yard lias received information that Mr Martin is alive. He lias been traced to a South London suburb. April 17. Mr W. Wiltshire says that as lie was saying farewell to his daughter on the Walmer Castle on April 5 a man in evening dress came aboard. He is convinced that the man was Mr Martin. Mr Wiltshire had previously spoken to a- girl who had just come from 'America and who said her expenses had been paid by a friend whom she expected to meet on the Walmer Castle. a local bank £13,000. The bank was supposed to hold the company’s warehouse receipts for the sale of 1800 bales of cotton as security. Only 93 bales are now in the stores. April 18. Renter advises that the Fourth National Bank of New .York has filed proceedings against Martin’s firm for forging a security valued at 25,000d01. April 19. Mr Martin’s friends have received a telegram from Switzerland, stating: “ Cease inquiries. All well. Writing.”
