CHARGE OF MURDER
LONDON, May 8. William Ward, who was arrested in Perth (W.A.) and taken to England on a charge of murder, has been brought before the court and remanded. The charge is that he murdered Edward Nixon Smith, who died as a result of injuries said to have been caused by a blow with an umbrella in a street quarrel at Chiswick on November 28, 1908. Ward informed a constable on the voyage Home that the deceased tried to arrest him .and was struck by an umbrella in a struggle. Ward also said that on learning that the deceased had been stabbed he went to Canada and thence to Australia, where he hid in the bush. A tailor named Marshall testified that he heard Ward threaten to gouge Smith's eye out. Another witness said he saw Ward following Smith and strike the latter with his umbrella. There was no struggle.
