CONSTABLE ASSAULTED.

AUCKLAND, April 22. Three men were charged in the Police Court to-day with assaulting Constable Mills on April 8. All three pleaded guilty. As the result of the encounter the constable was badly knocked about and had to be taken to the hospital. He ha* not yet resumed his duties. The Magistrate said the case was one of the most brutal and cowardly that had ever come before him. He regretted that the penalties which he could inflict were eo HRht. In the case of one of the accused he had been in prison already for seven days and as he was drunk at the time he was inclined to be more lenient with him. He sentenced bim to 14 days hard labour. The other two were sentenced to the maximum penalty of three months.
