CRIME IN FRANCE

PARIS, April 2. Two men named Prevent and Coulond were arrested while loitering outsid-e a bank, awaiting the exit of a messenger carrying a million and a-half francs and cash securities. Prevoat has confessed that ho intended to stun or poison the messenger. He had arranged with the driver of an automobile to enable him to escape. April 4. Carrouy, one of the ringleaders of the motor bandits, has been arrested. April 5. A messenger was robbed and killed at Avry, a suburb of Paris. The assassins have not been traced. Carouy, who was armed with revolvers wjhen arrested in connection with the Chantilly outrage, i 6 an expert chemist. He swallowed poison when taken into custody, but a doctor administered an antidote. The crowd attempted to lynch Carouy. Jewels to the value of £IO,OOO have been stolen by burglars from a residence of Mr Dernier, ex-Mexican Minister to France, at Neuilly. April 6. The epidemic of violent crimes is largely due to the psychological effects of the publication of the motor bandit*' exploits. April 8. A man named Callemin, nicknamed La Science, an accomplice of the motor bandits, has been arrested. The police hid in a courtyard throughout the night and banged the doors violently in his face when he appeared on a bicycle. Callemin drew a Browning pistol, but it was tipped up, and he was handcuffed. Two other Browning pistols, many cartridges and 6000 francs were concealed in the lining of his clothes. The police have now ?rrested 13 out of a supposed total of 30.
