DEATH OF MR EDWARD TERRY.
LONDON, April 2. Edward Terry, actor, is dead. Edward O'Connor Terry, actor-manager and proprietor of Terry's Theatre, London, was born in London on March 10, 1844. Ho married Ellen Deitz (1870) and Lady Hani?, widow of Sir Augustus Harris (1904). In his early professional Career io played under Sothern. Toole. G. V. Brooke! Amy Roselle, and Creswick. lie went to tho Strand under the management of Mrs Swanborough in 1868, and for seven years
took leading parts in the burlesques and comedies played there; was engaged at the Gaiety by Holliiighead in 1876. remaining there for eight years, and forming one of the famous quartet which included Nellie Farren, Kate Vaughan, and Royce. Ho opened ai Terry's with " The Churchwarden " in 1877, and produced the phenomenally successful Comedy " Sweet Lavender," which ran for 670 nights (out of which he is said to have cleared a fortune of £50.000, and its author about one-fourth of that amount). Three years later he produced " The Times," by Pinero, which ran for six months to record business, and in 1892 revived " The Magistrate." himself appearing for the first time as Mr Posket. During recent years he toured successfully in Australia, South Africa, and America) in 1899 was elected Grand Treasurer of the Freemasons; was also treasurer of the Royal General Theatrical Fund; lectured on "Church and Stage" before the Church Congress, 1889.
