AUCKLAND GRAMMAR SCHOOL.
AUCKLAND, March 23. The proposed new grammar school to he built on a site granted by the Defence Department at Mount lilden was discussed at a meeting of the Auckland Grammar School Board. The Mount Eden School Committee submitted a recommendation, which was agreed to, that the new school should be designed to accommodate 600 boys. The question of providing funds for the erection of the school was reported upon by a committee, which recommended that application should be made to the Government for £40,000 for the main building and for £IO,OCO for the proposed boardinghouse. The chairman (Sir Maui ice Q'RorkeJ said he doubted whether such a large sum as £50,000 could be obtained at the present crisis, but the committee had made a recommendation, and if it were carried it would be given efFect to. He did not know whether there was any precedent for such a large grant. Mr Tibbs said the Nelson College had received a large grant, and a grant of at least £lO 000 had been made to the Wellington College. It was resolved to ask the Government, for a grant of £20,000 towards the total cost of £50,000, which will probably bo required for the erection of the new school and the boarding-house.
