AUCKLAND, January 17,

The San Francisco correspondent of the New Zealand Herald states tlmt as a result of an interview between Mr Taft and the Oceanic Company’s representative it is announced that the. United States Government will pay a mail subsidy of 8s 4d par mile to a line carrying mails from San Francisco to New Zealand and Australia. via Honolulu and Pago-Pago. This ensures a resumption of the San Francisco service by the Ventura and Sonoma. These vessels will be refitted as oilburners. It is expected that they will be ready in June.
