CHRISTCHURCH MOTOR FATALITY.
THE INQUEST ADJOURNED. CHRISTCHURCH, January 20. An inquest was opened to-day into the death of Thomas Ryan, who died at the hospital last night from the effects of injuries received through a motor car running into him in Cathedral square about 5 o'clock on Friday evening. The Coroner said that the police were not satisfied that due care was us4d in driving the car, and required time in order to make further inquiries beforethe whole matter w’as placed before the jury.
Dr F. L. Scott, medical superintenj dent of the hospital, stated that on ex- ; animation of deceased when admitted he | found evidence of a fracture of the spine ,in the lower cervical region. The man i had also broken his left ankle. He took suddenly worse about 8 p.m., his breathing becoming very weak, and died about . 8.15, as the result of hie injuries. To the jury : He saw no signs of liquor I on the deceased. j Maurice Buckley Ryan, labourer, of j Sydenham, stated that the deceased was j his father, and was 64 years of age. He j was in good health and very active for j his years. . H e was accustomed for many years to be about town, and in the midst .of traffic. His hearing was not impaired, j and he was not blind or in any way infirm.
At this stage the inquest was adjourned till Wednesday.
