DEFENCE OF AUSTRALIA

LONDON, January 18

Fortnightly batches of 10 and 20 seamen and other ratings will commence to sail from England on the Ist of March. Seventeen officers will go later. Many of the reservists and pensioners who are thus joining the Australian navy will take their families with them.

HOBART, January 17.

In an address to the bluejackets Admiral King-Hall said that in the days to come the Commonwealth would depend largely upon her own jiaval forces. He urged the necessity of making their first line of defence so efficient and ready that when the time of testing came—if ever it did—the Australian navy would be ready to take its place in lino with the fleets of the Old Country in defence of the shores of Australia from hostile attack.
